Health

Head Start emphasizes the importance of the early identification, prevention and intervention of health problems. Every Head Start child is involved in a comprehensive health program, which includes immunizations, medical, dental, mental health, and nutritional services.

Program Goals

16Instead of learning their ABC’s, some of Utah’s children are learning to live with decaying teeth, poor nutrition, and inadequate health care. Before they can begin to learn, health issues must be addressed.

Along with educational needs, Head Start is also concerned with the physical well-being of children, to insure that each child is given the opportunity of a healthy start. At Salt Lake CAP Head Start, each child is screened to determine his or her overall physical health needs. If a health issue is identified, Head Start staff can help families establish long-term health care solutions. A large part of becoming ready-to-learn is to “feel” ready. A child who is in good health will be able to focus and eager to learn.

Incorporating daily physical activities, good nutrition, and oral hygiene are just a few of the important life skills children are taught while attending Head Start. Tracking and offering opportunities for children to be immunized are an important part of ensuring that children are ready to enter kindergarten with the best start possible.

Health Facts

  • Head Start children are at least eight percentage points more likely to be current with their immunizations than their kindergarten peers.
  • Studies demonstrate that by providing health and dental services to children and families, Head Start health programs improve the overall well-being of the children and families who otherwise might not have access to such health care.
